The Basics of Water Mitigation
Water mitigation is common practice following water intrusion into a structure and involves taking specific actions, preferably by professionally-trained experts, to mitigate any further damage.
If your home has been flooded to any degree, it is critical to have a professional inspection performed. Moisture in walls or under flooring is often not obvious and can only be detected using professional equipment.
What to expect from water mitigation:
- the removal of contents and materials which are unsalvageable including flooring of various kinds and drywall
- cleaning affected areas and structures
- the application of disinfectants and air sanitizers
- drying of the structure or area using professional equipment
- typically it also includes removal of any affected debris as a result of the water intrusion.
- moisture and humidity testing
- mold testing (not all water mitigation companies provide this service)
A professional can evaluate your structure and provide an estimate as to necessary steps needed and length of time. It’s typically based on the amount of water damage to the property.
Walls: Mitigation experts may inspect your walls and drywall to check for vapor barriers.
Suction and evaporation: Water must be extracted using machines designed for removing water from flooring and furnishings. This usually takes less than one day depending on the size of the property. Next, dehumidifiers and “air movers” may be used to encourage the evaporation of any remaining moisture in the structure or furnishings. This can take several days.
Heat and containment: When water damage is confined to one area of the structure, the specialists will work to contain the damage by sealing off the area from the rest of the structure and focusing on containment. The next step can involve bringing in warm air to encourage evaporation and drying.
Odors: Water mitigation may also involve the efforts to eliminate odors which can arise as a result of water damage.
